Sequencing Batch Reactor

Sequencing Batch Reactor (SBR) type activated sludge plant

This system features one or more tanks operated as batch activated sludge plants each tank cycling through a number of pre-determined operations; filling, aerating, settling and decanting to provide secondary treatment of sewage effluent using the principles of extended aeration.

The number of tanks used in the operation and the cycles are adjusted to achieve the desired effluent quality or to meet the variations in sewage loading anticipated at the plant.

With single tank systems a balancing tank is usually installed to receive wastewater whilst the aeration tank is being settled and decanted. With more than one tank the cycle may be staggered so that one tank is filling and aerating whilst the other is being left to stand to allow the solids to settle out before it is decanted.
